The Counselling Service

The counselling service provides two separate forms of counselling, long term psychodynamic and a short term service that is integrative.

Training Course Requirements

To be considered for a Volunteer Counselling Placement applicants are required to have as a minimum requirement completed a BACP/UKCP/BCP counselling certificate and to be in second yearof BACP/UKCP/BCP accredited Diploma in counselling. For the long term service the training course must be psychodynamic, for the short term service the training course can be person centred, integrative or psychodynamic.

Personal Counselling Requirements

To volunteer for either service we would expect applicants to have been established in personal counselling/therapy for a minimum period of 6 months.

Previous Clinical Experience

For the long term service no previous experience of face to face work is required, but we would expect some experience of telephone counselling or having provided support in a helping relationship such as befriending.

The short term service is not suitable as a first placement as volunteers are required to assess clients suitability for the service. We would expect volunteers to have gained 100 to 150 hours formal face to face experience before applying.
