‘Art for Wellbeing’ is a free six-week course funded by Barnet Southgate College, in partnership with Mind in Barnet. During this course, students can expect to develop skills in basic drawing and painting techniques whilst exploring personal experience of ‘self-care’ and wellbeing through the art making process, using both taught and experiential methods.

‘Art for Wellbeing’ has been devised by trained teacher and artist Rebekah Dean, who has over 10 years of experience teaching in adult community learning. The course recognises how the art making process becomes therapeutic separately from art therapy and has been developed around this idea through adult education.

The programme uses the core skill set that artists need to sustain professional practice, including observing the world around them, sharing ideas, reaching out to others, keeping on the move, and learning new things. This means that a student’s personal experience of the art making process is at the heart of their learning. These key artist skill sets have a distinct similarity to the five ways of wellbeing:

  • take notice
  • give
  • stay active
  • keep learning
  • connect with others

The course is open to all adults over 19 years of age wishing to develop basic skills in drawing and painting and connect with others through adult community learning.

LOCATION: The Art Space, artsdepot, 5 Nether Street, Tally Ho Corner, N12 0GA

DATES AND TIME: Wednesday January 8th – Wednesday February 12th 2020, 18.30 – 21.00

Why attend this course?

Art for Wellbeing has been devised by trained teacher and artist Rebekah Dean, who has over 10 years of experience teaching in adult community learning. The course recognises how the art making process becomes therapeutic without necessarily being art therapy, and has been developed around this idea through adult education. Using the core skill set that artists need to sustain professional practice, such as observing the world around them, sharing ideas, reaching out to others, keeping on the move and learning new stuff, means that a student’s personal experience of the art making process, is at the heart of the learning process.  And it is worth noting that these key artist skill sets have a distinct similarity to the 5 ways of wellbeing: Take notice; give; stay active; keep learning; connect with others (Government research).
